Student Press Law Center—
Advocating for Tomorrow’s Voices
For More Than 30 Years
Founded in 1974, the SPLC continues to be committed to nurturing and protecting First Amendment freedoms for high school and college students throughout the nation. As the authoritative voice on students’ First Amendment and freedom of information rights, the Center:
- Educates a diverse population of young people to understand, value and participate in a free press
- Provides leadership on First Amendment issues as they apply to all student media, including the Internet and evolving technologies
- Communicates the value of a free student press to the journalism, education, legal and philanthropic communities and to the general public
- Maintains a national presence and responds immediately to the changing needs of the Center’s constituencies.
More than 2,400 youth journalists, teachers and others contact the SPLC each year for assistance, advice or information. Over 40,000 visit our Web site each month. Those numbers increase every year. Read more about the SPLC on the official SPLC Web site.
The SPLC offers resources to students and educators at little or no cost. To do this important work, the SPLC depends on the support of individuals, foundations, corporations and other organizations.
