School board members dismissed from Ark. dress code case

ARKANSAS -- Three students who were punished for wearing black armbands to protest their school district's dress code can continue their claims against the district, its superintendent and the principal of the junior high school. But a federal judge on Wednesday dismissed the portions of the suit brought against individual school board members.

An "editorial advisory board" will oversee publication of East Coweta High School's student newspaper in response to the September issue, which contained several "negative" articles -- including a column criticizing a school beauty pageant and a satire suggesting that low-performing fifth-graders be executed -- the principal announced Tuesday.



Free-speech suit continues over policies enacted as settlement in prior case

A school district might have "chilled" student speech in its efforts to comply with a prior settlement reached with the ACLU by requiring students to participate in anti-harassment training and implementing a policy that forbade language that insults or stigmatizes an individual's sexual orientation, a federal appeals court ruled Oct. 26.
