Georgia middle school student punished for private Web site

18 weeks. That is apparently the punishment for students in one Georgia school district if they post material from home on a private Web site that school officials find "disruptive."According to a report in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, Matt Paul Foreman, 14, was suspended for 18 weeks for posting a Web page suggesting how to disrupt class at his Lawrenceville middle school.

Adviser to sue school for refusing to renew contract

The former newspaper adviser at Fort Valley State University says he plans to sue the school after his contract was not renewed in the spring of 1998. John Schmitt, who advised The Peachite at the rural, predominately black campus, 25 miles outside of Macon, says that the investigative pieces his students wrote were not what administrators wanted to read.

'Advisory board' formed after Ga. student paper runs 'Modest Proposal'-style satire

An "editorial advisory board" will oversee publication of East Coweta High School's student newspaper in response to the September issue, which contained several "negative" articles -- including a column criticizing a school beauty pageant and a satire suggesting that low-performing fifth-graders be executed -- the principal announced Tuesday.
