The Student Press Law Center will celebrate Sunshine Week, a weeklong
program that highlights freedom of information issues and emphasizes the
importance of open government, March 12-16 by releasing daily stories aimed at
helping high school and college journalists use open records to their
journalistic benefit.
Now in its third year, Sunshine Week, organized by
the American Society for Newspaper Editors and funded by a grant from the John
S. and James L. Knight foundation, will be March 11-17 and looks to encourage citizens to fight for an
open government and "give them access to information that makes their lives
better and their communities stronger," according to the organization's Web
site, www.sunshineweek.org.
The
SPLC today released an updated guide for high school journalists, titled Access to High School
Records, to encourage young journalists to pursue their own stories
highlighting open government.
From using open records such as faculty
salary charts and restaurant health inspection ratings to defending access to
student government and faculty committee meetings, the Student Press Law
Center's 2007 coverage hopes to part the clouds and let the light shine through.
So join us March 12 as we begin our weeklong celebration. Until then, brush up
on Sunshine Week coverage from previous years by clicking on the links to the
