Student Press Law Center Links Policy

Linking to the SPLC
Hypertext links, or links, are the heart of the World Wide Web. The ability to jump between sites is part of the web's core technology. We encourage you to link your website to the SPLC website. While you do not need to contact the SPLC for permission to create a link to our site, we would appreciate your sending us a short note once you have done so.

What We Link to from the SPLC Website
The SPLC will include links from the SPLC website to external websites where they closely match the needs and interests of our membership and constituents. Linking for the sake of linking is discouraged. Requests by outside organizations to add their link to our website will generally be considered for placement in one or both of the following locations on the SPLC website:

Other Resources:
This is our traditional "links" page and includes hyperlinks to organizations and online resources that the SPLC determines are of special interest to the student press community. Organizations included on our Other Resources page will generally work directly with or on behalf of student media or journalism educators. In some cases, however, an organization may be included that plays a significant role working on a major issue that is directly relevant to the student press community. In addition to providing substantive information, we hope that our links page would serve as an "electronic Rolodex" for the student press community. For space reasons, we do not provide links to individual student media.

Homework Zone:
In the SPLC Homework Zone, we attempt to collect the most helpful online resources, arranged by category, for students working on journalism, media law or civil rights-related school projects. While our range of topics is fairly broad, we are selective regarding sites included in the Zone. As a service to our visitors (and to limit the problem of "information overload"), the Zone will be limited to quality sites that are well-researched, easily navigated, regularly maintained, reasonably "student-friendly" and that make available significant amounts of substantive resource material free of charge. In some cases, a site that does not contain substantive resource material may be linked to where it provides a useful example regarding an issue relevant to a common student research project. The Homework Zone, unlike our traditional links page, is not intended to serve as an all-inclusive "electronic Rolodex."

Additionally, decisions about whether to link to an external website will generally be based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:

(1) The website must be a good source of noncommercial information relevant to the student press community and individuals interested in media law, civil rights or journalism issues. We may occasionally link to commercial sites, but only if there is substantial content publicly available without charge that meets our policy criteria.

(2) The website must provide information that is consistent with the SPLC's Mission.

(3) The site, taken as a whole, should be appropriate for visitors to our website, many of whom are minors.

(4) Special consideration will be given to those organizations that maintain a link from their website to the Student Press Law Center website. The SPLC does not, however, enter into formal reciprocal link agreements.

Advertising Links
At this time, the SPLC does not accept advertisements in either its print publications or on its website.

Removal of Link
The SPLC reserves the right to remove any link at any time and without notice or reason. A link may be removed if its content no longer meets the selection criteria or its content is outdated or erroneous.

Link Request Process
If an organization would like its website to be linked to from the SPLC site they should contact the SPLC Webmaster. Please include the URL of the requested link site, a short description of the site and contact information for the site operator in your message. If the Webmaster, in consultation with the executive director, determines that the link meets our criteria a link will be established on the appropriate page.
