Join us at AU for a panel on the first 25 years of Hazelwood

Our examination of the 25th anniversary of the Hazelwood decision limiting student expression rights continues next week with a panel discussion titled “The First Amendment Goes to School: 25 Years of Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier.”

I’m looking forward to hearing from the panelists, myself. When a Supreme Court decision is only mildly wrong, you can usually reconstruct what might have happened in your head. But when a Supreme Court decision represents a real death of freedom, as Hazelwood does, it merits expert autopsy.

Joining SPLC Executive Director Frank LoMonte will be Frank Susman, Senior Trial Counsel at Spencer Fane Britt & Browne LLP, who represented the student editor-plaintiffs; Edwin C. Darden, founding partner at the Practical Education Law Team and former staff attorney at the National School Boards Association; and Lucy A. Dalglish, Dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.

The panel will be on Monday, January 28 between 4 and 6 p.m. at the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. For more details and information about CLE credit availability, see this flyer.
