Don't miss our upcoming webinar, Hazelwood Then and Now
Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. ET the Student Press Law Center will host a live webinar featuring three legal experts to tell us about the past, present and future of student media censorship in the aftermath of the 1988 Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier Supreme Court case.
Hosted by SPLC Senior Legal Counsel Mike Hiestand, the 30-minute discussion will feature former SPLC Director Mark Goodman and Senior Legal Fellow Frank LoMonte.
The conversation will recall the circumstances of the Hazelwood decision and the corrosive effect it has had on student media. Then we’ll learn about the rise of the New Voices movement, a grassroots campaign that is changing state censorship laws to counter Hazelwood by clarifying protections for student journalists and their advisers.
This webinar is part of the SPLC's Hazelwood Day of Action. Students from around the country, plus Cathy Kuhlmeier, Mary Beth Tinker and SPLC Executive Director Hadar Harris will be speaking via Facebook Live. Click here for a full schedule.
