Sunshine Week 2015: Auditing universities' Clery Act compliance

Congress approved the Clery Act in 1990 in an attempt to make colleges more transparent about the crimes that occur on their campuses.

Under the law, all colleges that receive federal funding — both public and private — must maintain an updated crime log for immediate public inspection.

But how easy is it to access this basic information? In celebration of Sunshine Week 2015, the SPLC is rocking a GoPro camera and asking for crime logs at Washington, D.C.-area university police departments.
