ALABAMA — Copies of the student newspaper at the University of North Alabama were stolen after the paper ran a front-page story about a fraternity event.
Between 150 and 200 copies of the University of North Alabama’s The Flor-Ala newspaper were seen being taken by two fraternity members Thursday morning, said Josh Skaggs, the paper’s editor-in-chief.
An article on the front page of the paper reported on the school’s Derby Days, a fraternity event. Several Greek organizations were involved in painting cars on campus with washable car paint, Skaggs said.
Skaggs contacted the office of student engagement after confirming that three distribution places were missing papers. Editors then called the president of the fraternity, informing him of the theft. After the call, some of the missing papers were returned.
Editors plan to file a police report about the thefts. The weekly paper has a circulation of 4,500 at a cost of $985.
This is the 26th newspaper theft reported to the Student Press Law Center in 2012.
