Mo. paper has trouble collecting ad payments

MISSOURI ‘ A debate erupted this semester over whether college departments should pay for ads in St. Louis Community College’s newspaper, The Montage.

The problem arose from an oral tradition of giving free advertising to departments and student organizations. Two years ago, faculty adviser Tammy Merrett-Murry reevaluated the tradition, and determined a new written policy was needed.

Under the new policy, The Montage gives limited free advertising to recognized student organizations, but not to departments within the college.

Merrett-Murry said it has been difficult bringing departments in line with the new policy. While most have abided, The Montage never received payment for an ad placed by the career and employment services department more than a year ago.

Even though The Montage is still negotiating with Student Activities Director Steve Brady over the payment, the paper hopes to collect its money soon.
