Paper sues for access to Vermont campus court records and hearings

A daily newspaper in Vermont has filed a lawsuit against the state colleges system, asking that it be allowed to access all disciplinary hearings and records concerning students.

The Caledonian-Record, a daily newspaper based in St. Johnsbury, filed a lawsuit against the Vermont State College system after Lyndon State College refused to open the disciplinary records of about two dozen students who were arrested at a Dec. 10 party for underage drinking. Eventually, the school gave up the information, but when the Record requested notice of future disciplinary meetings under the state open-meetings law, as well as more detailed past disciplinary records, the state college system refused.

The system claims that student disciplinary matters are not subject to Vermont
