Radio duo taken off air during reading

\nWISCONSIN – Two radio announcers at St. Norbert College\nwere silenced during their reading of J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher\nin the Rye” in response to complaints from a campus student.\n

Christopher Danczyk and Murray McGough were about thirty minutes\ninto their recitation when their program was interrupted in March.\nThe profanity in the book about a rebellious teenager coming of\nage elicited a phone call from a listener on the De Pere campus\nto the vice president of student life, Richard Rankin.

“We had started [reading the novel] earlier, and we just\nwanted to keep reading it,” Danczyk told the Associated Press.\n

The request to go off the air during their 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.\nslot came politely from the director of college Safety and Security,\nsaid Danczyk.

“He was told there were people on the radio saying obscenities,”\nhe said.

Rankin said the last time he received a complaint call about\nthe content on the radio came from the same caller, a year-and-a-half\nearlier.

“I think they’d be making a huge mistake if they kicked\nus off the air for reading ‘Catcher in the Rye,'” said McGough.\n

In protest, McGough and Danczyk went on the air the following\nThursday and read sensual passages from the Bible. \n
